In 2023, I hiked Grays and Torreys Peaks—my first time summiting two peaks in a single day. Of course, it just so happened to be the one day of the year helicopters were flying in trail maintenance supplies. To stay out of their way, the land management crew had us moving in timed waves, pushing hikers to speed-walk (or practically jog) uphill to the next checkpoint every 20 minutes. It felt less like a hike and more like the high school pacer test I used to dread.
But when we finally summited and made our way across Kelso Ridge, the effort was worth it—the views were absolutely unreal. I named this painting Altitude Sickness because after basically running a double summit, that’s exactly how I felt.
